Waitzer Hall is more than a building. It represents Eastern Virginia Medical School’s (EVMS) commitment to excellence in education. Offering a team-based learning environment that promotes collaboration, the design embodies EVMS’ goals of fostering scholarship in a professional environment, facilitating best practices in education, and unifying the campus with a cohesive set of building standards. This academic building is a hub for the collaborative work that defines EVMS’ approach to medicine, uniting teaching, study, support, and administrative workplaces under one roof.

Bustling with future healthcare heroes hitting the books or socializing in common areas, Waitzer is home to first- and second-year medical students. Designed in partnership with RRMM Architects, the building consists of a three-story podium of academic and common-area spaces and an 11-story iconic tower offering parking and office suites with a spectacular boardroom overlooking the Elizabeth River.

Waitzer showcases a team-based learning environment that promotes EVMS’ commitment to best-in-class interprofessional education by taking advantage of interdisciplinary adjacencies, offering the right mix of open and closed teaming and study areas, and thoughtfully connecting teaching and workplace spaces. Podium floors one and two feature a testing center, large and small classrooms, and advanced technology for premier, student-centered instruction. All are designed with flexible layouts and furniture that can be quickly rearranged to support multiple functions. With floor-to-ceiling windows that offer abundant natural night, solo study areas, and an easily accessible wellness center, Waitzer supports “total student” needs.

Located in the Hampton Roads community at the bustling intersection of Colley Avenue and Brambleton Avenue, Waitzer Hall sits at the Eastern Virginia Medical Center campus entrance that includes the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The building’s prominent location serves as the gateway to the medical campus, promising next-level scholarship and outstanding patient care to those who call Hampton Roads home.
