Why You Can’t Concentrate at Work

EYP's Leigh Stringer is one of the experts quoted in the Wall Street Journal article, "Why You Can't Concentrate at Work." “Visual noise,” activity or movement around the edges of an employee's field of vision, is disruptive to analytical thinking and creativity. Experts weigh in on why visual noise has become an issue for many workers and shares examples of how some firms are dialing down distractions so their employees can better concentrate on their jobs. Successful tactics include modifying work station layouts; using plants to create green “walls”; and establishing quiet buffer zones between work spaces. Leigh offers her perspective on visibility's impact on employees. "Being visible to bosses and colleagues can make workers in some jobs feel pressured to conform to others’ expectations. If employees default to keeping their heads down and typing on their computers to look busy, rather than taking time to reflect or brainstorming with others, innovation or analytical work may suffer."

Highlights from EYP's innovation program include active 1:1 mentorships, ‘up/down” knowledge-sharing - including technical and “softer” communications and management skills - and extensive research through internal employee grants programs and research with business and academic partners.

National GSA Design Excellence Award Win

Birch Bayh Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse

This award pays tribute to GSA's best current work in architecture, engineering, historic preservation, workplace design, and related disciplines and sets the standard for all federal workplaces. The historic Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Indianapolis houses the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. A distinguished example of Beaux-Arts Architecture, the facility was constructed from 1902 to 1905 and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The modernization of Birch Bayh invisibly transformed the monumental landmark into a “machine for sustainability.” The structure now measurably mitigates the site’s urban heat island effect, decreases the building’s carbon footprint, and adds hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to the city’s supply every year.
