This complex, multi-phased project created a new Emergency Department (ED), Outpatient Registration, Main Public Entrance, two floors of Nursing Units (60 beds), and modernized a Laboratory. To gather evidence on optimal environments for patients and practitioners, we staged patient room and nurse workstation mock-ups. Treatment rooms were same-handed to reduce variability and provide flexibility for medical staff. Nurse stations were opened to treatment rooms to improve patient visibility. To improve patient flow within the ED, the design created a triage room, minor care room, and sub-waiting area was built to increase patient flow. Both client and community are benefiting from our collaborative evidence-based design approach.
